[ Using Prudence for Budgeting ]
View PDF Version
Background
Prudence is the file server used to support budget planning. PILLAR is the application used to prepare budgets. Prudence is used by the Senior Business Officers and their staff in every School and Center and by departmental BAs in some Schools and Centers, primarily in the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Provost's Centers. The use of PILLAR and Prudence at Penn is administered by the University Office of Budget and Management Analysis.
Prudence Access
Access to the Prudence file server is provided to the Senior Business Officer and appropriate members of their staff. In addition, limited access is routinely provided to the local support providers (LSPs) who support these staff. To request Prudence user ids or changes to security, Senior BAs must complete and sign the forms at http://www.budget.upenn.edu/dlDocs/forms/
Forms should be returned to the Budget Office, which administers the security within PILLAR and forwards them for processing of the Prudence access.
Connecting to Prudence
Technical information on connecting to Prudence can be found at the provider page at
http://www.upenn.edu/computing/provider/prudence/.
Diagnosing Problems with Prudence
LSPs who receive problem reports about connecting to Prudence should confirm that Prudence is up and then determine whether the problem is connectivity (this workstation can't connect using any userid) or security (this userid can't sign on using any workstation).

Connectivity Problems
To test connectivity to Prudence (prudence.admin.upenn.edu), LSPs may use the following
userid: anylsp
password: ihelpben
LSPs who determine that Prudence is up but find that a particular workstation has trouble connecting,
should consult with the Provider Desk for assistance. The Provider Desk should try to solve this using its
normal procedures for connectivity problems. It should escalate connectivity problems that it cannot solve
to either ISC Technology Support Services (if it seems to be a problem on the local end) or ISC Systems
Engineering and Operations (if it seems to be a problem at the Prudence end).
Security Problems
Users who have forgotten their Prudence passwords and want the passwords reset can request this through their assigned budget analyst. Users should be reminded that they have personal ids and passwords for Prudence access, in which their ID should match their PennName (and all their other personal userids at Penn). This is sometimes confused with the PILLAR username and password, which is used to open the PILLAR file for a particular School or group of organizations, and is not specific to a particular person.
Users who report that they cannot open their PILLAR files from the DISTRIBx folders should be reminded that PILLAR cannot open files from a location where the user has only read access (such as their DISTRIB folder). Instead, they should copy the distributed files to their working folder on Prudence, or to another local disk or server that is secured and backed up.
Other security problems should be referred to Francesca Seidita at 215.898.1929 or
seidita@pobox.upenn.edu.
Installing Pillar
To install the latest version of Pillar when deploying a new machine, LSPs should connect to Prudence
and follow the Penn Specific Instructions in the Plan/INSTALL folder. LSPs who have installation problems
should call Francesca Seidita, at 215.898.1929 or write to seidita@pobox.upenn.edu.
We will escalate problems to Hyperion (the Pillar vendor) if necessary.
